Behind the Curtain: Exploring the Fisher Theatre
Behind the Curtain: Exploring the Fisher Theatre
For nearly a century, the Fisher Building has quietly harbored a world unto itself—one devoted to escape, imagination, and impeccable craft. Tucked within this Art Deco colossus is an icon inside an icon: the Fisher Theatre. What began as a lavish, Mesoamerican-inspired movie palace has evolved into the beating heart of Broadway in Detroit, delighting audiences generation after generation since it first raised its curtain.
This tour invites you beyond the velvet rope and behind the scenes. We’ll trace the theatre’s history while exploring its most coveted vantage points and hidden spaces—from balcony to orchestra pit, lobby to dressing rooms, and finally, onto the stage itself. It’s a rare opportunity to experience the Fisher Theatre not as a patron, but as an insider, standing where performers, stagehands, and stars have stood before.
The tour lasts approximately 75 minutes. Guests should wear comfortable walking shoes and be prepared to climb roughly two flights of stairs and to stand for extended periods. Elevators are available, though not all areas of this historic theatre are fully accessible. The experience is best suited for guests ages 12 and up.
Tours depart promptly. Please arrive at least 10 minutes before your ticketed time. The tour begins and concludes inside the Fisher Building, directly in front of the Fisher Theatre entrance—where Detroit’s love affair with live performance continues to take center stage.
