Pucks, Ponds, and the Past - A Tour of Detroit’s Hockey History
Pucks, Ponds, and the Past - A Tour of Detroit’s Hockey History
For decades, Detroit has proudly worn the title of “Hockeytown.” But long before the Winged Wheel owned the ice, the good ol’ hockey game was already alive and thriving here—played in rinks and on frozen ponds by everyday Detroiters building the sport from the ground up. Now, as the Red Wings mark their 100th anniversary, this first-of-its-kind bus tour will take you deep into the hidden corners, legendary moments, and surprising stories of Detroit’s hockey legacy.
We’ll trace the earliest recorded games played in the city, stand where arenas once shook with roaring crowds at both the “Old Red Barn” and “The Joe,” and uncover the personalities, rivalries, and quirks that shaped hockey in the Motor City. You’ll hear tales of the mystery of jersey number six, the ice-cold war between Little Caesars and Compuware, and how Detroit’s first hockey victory may have belonged not to a hockey team at all—but to a curling club.
Along the way you’ll unravel the origins of the “Red Wing,” learn how octopi wound up flying through the air, and discover why Detroit’s hockey roots run even deeper than a century.
Whether you’re a casual fan or a die-hard who bleeds red and white, this tour is a spirited, fun, and surprising dive into the sport that helped shape Detroit’s identity—on and off the ice.
Because drinking and swearing come with the history, all public bus tours are strictly 21 years old and older. (To date, the oldest person to join one of our tours was 97 years of aged awesomeness. We've also hosted a 21st birthday party—and everyone in between!)
The tour leaves promptly at the ticketed time. Late arrivals can not be accommodated.
This tour departs from and returns to The Detroit History Club, (3103 Commor St., Hamtramck, MI 48212.) Parking is on street. Doors to the club open 30 minutes before ticketed tour start time. Guests are invited to come inside, check into the tour, and relax until the departure time.
Your order confirmation email will serve as your only ticket. Please save your email and be prepared to show it on your phone or printed to board the bus. (We do this to avoid the ticketing fees that come along with ticketing systems. The price of your ticket will remain the same throughout checkout with no added fees for tax.)
If you have a large group consider booking any of our fabulous tours as a private charter. We can arrange to pick your group up from any location, on any day and any time. Check out our Private Tours link for more information.
